Who We Are
The Lutheran Advocates for Maritime Mission is a non-profit organization which:
- Facilitates Lutheran participation in seafaring ministry in most North American seaports.
- Is an Independent Lutheran Organization related to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) through the Congregation and Synodical Mission Unit
Founded in Savannah, Georgia in 1981, LAMM. has been building a cooperative ecumenical network among groups and individuals who are committed to proclaiming Christ in word and deed among seafarers and fishers. LAMM provides limited funding for Chaplain training.
Our Global Mission
We enlist and empower God’s loving, caring people to carry out Christ’s Great Commission and Great Commandment within the maritime world. LAMM seeks to fulfill this mission by facilitating Lutheran participation in ecumenical and holistic ministries of witness and service among the people of the sea and to promote support for such ministry among all Lutheran congregations and church bodies. LAMM is a Major Advocate of:
- Seafarers’ Bible Correspondence Course
- Christmas At Sea Programs
Congregations and maritime ministries associated with LAMM focus upon recruiting and training at least one crew member on each vessel as a ministering seafarer. These seafarers have a wonderful opportunity to carry the Gospel port to port and to their families back home. They assist shore-based missions in helping seafarers see Jesus as their light and anchor in all situations.
